Study Shows 4-H Youth Healthier than Peers

4-H News

4-H’ers less likely to smoke, drink alcohol, use drugs

Chevy Chase, MD (April 11, 2011) – According to recent findings from Tufts University, 4-H youth are engaging in positive healthy living behaviors more often than youth that do not participate in 4-H. According to the study, 4-H’ers, regardless of their background, socio-economic status, race, and gender, thrive through the health/safety education and experiences they receive through 4-H programming.

Youth development scholar, Dr. Richard Lerner, works with researchers at the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University to conduct The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development. The longitudinal study has found that, when compared to other youth, young people involved in 4-H are:
  • More likely to spend more time exercising or being physically active;
  • Two times less likely to engage in drug use;
  • Two times less likely to use cigarettes or drink alcohol.
“The results of this longitudinal study continually reinforce the idea that when youth participate in programs such as 4-H, they thrive in numerous ways including health, positive development, and community contribution,” said Dr. Lerner. “The comparisons we’ve made between 4-H youth and other young people highlight the considerable strengths and health of the young men and young women participating in 4-H around the country.”

4-H Healthy Living programs are conducted by the 109 land-grant universities and the Cooperative Extension System, and seek to address national issues including nutrition, physical fitness, substance abuse, safety, and social and emotional wellness.

“With nearly 2.7 million youth enrolled in 4-H healthy living programs in 2009, the findings from the Tufts study underline 4-H’s unique ability to make a significant impact on the health and wellness of many of our nation’s future leaders,” said Donald T. Floyd, Jr., president and CEO of National 4-H Council. “Working in conjunction with the White House Let’s Move! campaign and the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award challenge, 4-H’s extensive healthy living programs equip youth with the knowledge and skills that will prepare them physically, emotionally and socially to meet the challenges of the 21st century."

4-H National Headquarters, National Institute of Food and Agriculture, and National 4-H Council have made a significant commitment to participate in the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award challenge, aiming to have 100,000 4-H members complete the challenge by September 2011.

The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award recognizes those who log their recommended physical activity for six consecutive weeks, five days a week (60 minutes for kids, 30 minutes for adults). Visit http://www.presidentschallenge.org/natl4-H for more information. Lead by First Lady Michelle Obama, Let’s Move! is working together with 4-H and other community organizations to combat the epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States.

About the 4-H Study of Positive Youth DevelopmentThe 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development is a longitudinal study which began in 2002, through the support of National 4-H Council. Youth development scholar, Dr. Richard Lerner, worked with researchers at the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University to conduct the study. Youth are measured in “waves” across time which compared those that participate in 4-H to those that do not. The study is currently in wave seven. The 6,400 adolescents surveyed are racially and geographically diverse representing 34 states in the nation. For more information about the study visit www.4-h.org. Chad Ripberger helps lead the way with Digital Storytelling!

Chad Ripberger helped lead the recent workshop about Digital Storytelling sponsored by the National 4-H Council. The workshop brought 4-H video crews from across the United States together for 3 days to discuss and explore methods to produce high quality videos inspired by youth. These videos will help educate others about Science, Engineering and Technology content in ways that are fun for youth.

Digital Storytelling across the U.S. grows!

Kate McCloskey and Pamela Roberts, 4-H agents from Washington State, intently explore the processes related to Digital Storytelling at the recent "SET in Our Community" workshop in Washington D.C. sponsored by the National 4-H Council.

Kate and Pamela will be working with two urban communities - Spokane and Vancouver - to encourage the expansion of digital storytelling in 4-H - especially as related to Science, Engineering and Technology. They were proud to be chosen to represent Washington State at this training and to return with ideas and inspirations that they can share with other 4-H programs.

Making friends from across the United States!

Anthony Merriweather, Tyrus Wilcox and Hannah Tipton - 4-H videographers - stand in front of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington D.C. These and other 4-H youth came to our nation's capitol to learn more about digital storytelling through video. They will now return to their home states to share what they have learned and to encourage others to become involved in producing 4-H videos - especially those that teach about Science, Engineering and Technology concepts.

Tyrus Wilcox and Marquel Allen stand in front of the Jefferson Memorial in Washington D.C.. Tyrus and Marqual became acquainted during a video workshop sponsored by the National 4-H Council. Together these bright 4-H youth explored the challenges of Digital Storytelling related to Science, Engineering and Technology! (Marqual kept everyone in stitches during the training - always eager to laugh and have fun!)

Fred Powell and Tanisha English await the showing of the Butterfly videos!
Two leaders with consummate professional poise and grace.

Pamela Roberts and Richard Reeves enjoy a last laugh before heading home!
Richard has stretched everyone's knowledge of dramatic play in video with youth!

Tyrus Wilcox and Anthony Merriweather enjoyed each other's company!
Anthony was a terrific sport, who put up with lots of ribbing from older Tyrus!

Pamela Roberts and Fred Powell - a quiet respect and friendship established!
Fred kept us laughing with his butterfly character and voice over!

What 4-H Network News techies do when they fly!

Would anyone be surprised to know that our techies Hannah Tipton and Tyrus Wilcox, 4-H Network News reporters, preferred to explore their computers and the Internet, rather than go to a movie! We had to kill some time before our flight to Washington D.C. from Seattle so these computer whizzes took some time to Photoshop images and search the Net for fun!

Tyrus gives life some serious consideration.

Reading in airports encouraged for youth...

Hannah Tipton, 4-H Network News reporter, and Pamela Roberts, Jefferson County 4-H agent, celebrate the infamous and fascinating magazine, "Sky Mall." After spending countless hours while flying to D.C. recently, they became experts at all the latest gadgets. Hannah is now trying to convince Pam to purchase an underwater camera for 4-H Network News (as advertised in Sky Mall). Perhaps our next trip will be to Hawaii???

4-H Network News goes to D.C.!

4-H Life Skills Model

Click on image to open larger format.

Life skill outcomes were chosen as measurements of quality because Family Living and 4-H Youth Development programs focus their work on teaching youth and adults the life skills necessary to become Capable, Competent and Caring Citizens. The life skills model "Targeting Life Skills" (TLS) from Iowa State University was used as a model to create this system.

The Targeting Life Skills (TLS) Model consists of 35 life skills. These life skills were identified through a process of reviewing and integrating numerous life skills models. Those life skills or competencies that consistently emerged as being necessary for individuals to attain success in life were used (Hendricks, 1999).

PROGRAM PLANNING

Programs that incorporate the TLS Model help individuals reach their full potential through a positive approach to life skill development. The model provides a format incorporating major points of program planning:
  • Delivering information and skill practice at the appropriate developmental level for the target audience
  • Writing specific learning objectives for life skill development that are measurable
  • Completing an instructional plan that creates experiences based on experiential learning theory to achieve life skill development
  • Identifying observable/measurable indicators of change using these indicators to effectively evaluate program impact/goal. (Hendricks, 1999)
To learn more about the TLS Model and to order support materials, see the TLS Model Web site.
