4-H Know Your Clothes!
King County 4-H shows multiple examples of clothing "make overs" so that teens have concrete ideas of how to transform their clothing choices for more formal events. This film is about 15 minutes long, but if you want good ideas of how to choose clothing that is appropriate for business activities, conferences, etc. it's well worth watching the entire video. Setting of the film was a Goodwill Store so you can get the look you need for not too much cost. Great job, kids!
Jefferson County well represented at 4-H Know Your Government 2010!

Jefferson County was well represented at 4-H Know Your Government (KYG) in Olympia, Washington from February 13-16, 2010. Six youth delegates, Sarah Chisick, Kaila Janders, Abbi Robocker, Chloe Robocker, Kaylee Short and Hannah Tipton, with lead chaperone, Sue Hay, experienced the roles of lobbyists and senators throughout the conference weekend at the Red Lion Inn.
One other youth, Angelina Pace, had extra responsibilities as a Conference Facilitator (CF). She and Core Committee (adult leadership) member, Marianne Walters, were in Olympia from Feb 12-16, helping to prepare and conduct the conference, after weekend training in January with seven other youth and 4-H adult staff and volunteers to plan the KYG 2010 experience.Along with three other counties, Jefferson County KYG supported Senate Bill 5946 with following title: An act of protecting freedom of student press and speech. This bill addressed protection of student rights under the First Amendment. The bill sponsors were: McDemont, Murray, Keiser, Fairley, Kline, and Marr. The bill proposed to ensure free speech and free press protections of high school and college students in school-sponsored media. This was one of eleven bills passed in the mock legislature and presented to the Washington State Legislature February 16.
The delegates were busy with a rigorous schedule lobbying mock legislators, testifying before mock senate and house committees and floors, voting on bills, touring the capitol, meeting with real State Senators and Representatives, and having fun… challenge activities, dance, games, movies, shopping, and, of course, eating and making new friends from across the state.

4-H Know Your Government Conference runs a robust election

Eight North Olympic Peninsula (Jefferson and Clallam Counties) participants were among nearly 300 attendees at the annual Washington State University Extension 4-H Know Your Government (KYG) Conference. This year’s conference featured the theme, “Decision 2008.”
Twenty-one teen delegates from across the state vied for the position of KYG Governor and came to Olympia prepared to discuss issues including transportation, energy, immigration, and health care. During the four-day event, youth created a Know Your Government platform that took stands on topics, including education, the economy, the environment, and safety. Before the actual convention, county delegations presented their candidates and platform planks at a Statewide Virtual Community Caucus through video streaming connections at 18 WSU Learning Center sites, including the WSU Learning Center in Port Hadlock.
Chloe Robocker ran for KYG Governor, representing Jefferson County. She gave a speech to the convention and energetically worked with her team to hand out frog pins with blinking lights and the theme, “Hop to it – vote for Chloe!” You can see Chloe’s speech and others at http://4hkyg.blogspot.com/.
Sue Hay, advisor, stated, “We took individuals from various clubs in Jefferson County, some who were meeting each other for the first time, and the result was a diverse and dynamic team that really stepped up to the plate on their platform development and political campaign.” Caleb Klein from Lincoln County eventually won the election, inspiring the convention with rousing speeches and debate and a stated commitment to the 4-H focus on leadership and community service.
Advisors and chaperones were Sue Hay and Marianne Walters. They wish to thank the many service organizations that helped finance this wonderful experience for local youth. The 4-H Know Your Government conference is an annual event that serves all interested youth in grades 9-12 to strengthen their connection to political and governmental process through hands-on educational experiences. OLYMPIA — Brittany Roberson, 16, and Victoria Wilson, 18, both of Lacey, raced around Capitol Campus, peppering staff members, lobbyists and anyone else with a suit with questions.

"Can we get a copy of all the current bills?" Roberson, a River Ridge High School student, asked the staff members at the Legislative Information Center.
Before they could answer, Wilson, a Timberline High School student, asked, "Do you know the youngest representative? What about the oldest?"
The two were part of the annual Washington State University Extension 4-H "Know Your Government" conference last week. About 300 attendees from 4-H clubs across the state came to the Red Lion Hotel Olympia and practiced parliamentary procedure, met their hometown legislators at the Capitol and voted on planks of a platform.
"It gives them a good sense of what goes on in our government — how decisions get made," said Sarah Wilson, Victoria Wilson's mother and one of the parent volunteers at the conference.
Official tours
The conference attendees from out of town opted for the official tours of the Capitol, but the eight Thurston County students decided to design a scavenger hunt, requiring collection of signatures and information from the staff members and departments they learned about during the weekend.
"If you live here, you go on the Capitol tour all the time," said Spencer Nelson, 16, who is home-schooled. "It's always better to do something than to just go on another tour."
"Part of it is they get the opportunity to talk to people, to get to know the offices and what they do there," Sarah Wilson said.
This year's Know Your Government topic was about elections, and the students also listened to speakers from the Secretary of State's Office and elected their own annual governor, Caleb Klein of Lincoln County's 4-H.
"These kids are on fire; they can't wait to vote," said 4-H spokeswoman Betsy Fradd. "A lot of our youth are already involved in leadership in their home counties and throughout the state."
Washington State 4-H Director Pat BoyEs complemented this year's participants as exemplary.
"The participation level and the energy level and the quality of the topics they chose for the platforms — the young people together made a very good conference," BoyEs said.

Pat Boyes and Denny Fleenor Moderate Virtual Caucus for 4-H Know Your Government
Pat Boyes, Washington State 4-H Director, and Denny Fleenor, WSU Senior Communications Coordinator, moderated the 4-H Know Your Government Virtual Caucus that was held state-wide on January 23, 2008. 4-H youth at fourteen video conferencing centers across the state were brought together through the Virtual Caucus, in which counties presented their candidates and platforms for the 2008 4-H KYG Conference.
Pat and Denny entertained and educated 4-H participants as they analyzed and commented on the the platforms and issues raised by various county parties.

Youth Reporters Cover "Media and Politics" At 4-H Know Your Government Conference
Participants in the 2007 4-H Know Your Government Conference at the State Capitol in Olympia this February experienced something new they will likely never forget. The conference theme, "Media and Politics," was a perfect fit for 4-H State Ambassadors to practice the role of 4-H Network News political reporters. After an intense evening of training on camera, these articulate youth leaders moved throughout the Capitol, interviewing State Senators and Representatives from their various districts.
Kyle Simon, Kittitas County 4-H member and 4-H State Ambassador, conducted an on camera interview with Governor Christine Gregoire. The interview was a spontaneous one which occurred when the 4-H news team peered over the railing in the Capitol Dome and saw the Governor talking with school groups below. They hustled down the stairs to approach the Governor, who immediately recognized the 4-H microphone flag and knew she was in for a professional interview. Kyle showed his poise under pressure as he quickly prepared his microphone and positioned himself among the crowd of people to ask her, "Is there anything that you can recommend for youth to become more involved in the democratic process?
The Know Your Government Conference serves to strengthen the connection between youth and our political and social networks through education, experience, application and inspiration.
