Master Gardeners go high tech with plant clinics

WSU Jefferson County Master Gardeners now use computers, digital cameras, video and high-speed Internet connections to diagnose plant disease and insect questions at the plant clinics offered locally from March through October.

Since 1975, local trained citizen volunteers have been looking at fungi on leaves, identifying insects, and helping local gardeners and farmers know more about their plants and use less chemicals. Each year more than 300 plant specimens and insects are sent to WSU researchers, who support the volunteers with back-up research and identification.
