Broadband comes to Jefferson County, Washington!

TOMORROW: SECRETARY LOCKE AND WASHINGTON ELECTED OFFICIALS TO ANNOUNCE RECOVERY ACT INVESTMENT TO IMPROVE BROADBAND INTERNET ACCESS IN WASHINGTON STATE

WASHINGTON – U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke will join U.S. Reps. Jay Inslee and Brian Baird, and Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn tomorrow to announce a Recovery Act investment that will help improve economic opportunity and support job creation in Washington State. The event will follow an announcement by Vice President Joe Biden outlining new projects across America that will bring reliable broadband Internet service to communities that currently have little or no access.

Congress passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in February 2009 at the urging of President Obama, who signed it into law on February 17, 2009. A direct response to the economic crisis, the Recovery Act had three immediate goals: create new jobs as well as save existing ones, spur economic activity and invest in long-term economic growth, and foster unprecedented levels of accountability and transparency in government spending. The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office recently said that the Recovery Act is responsible for saving or creating as many as 2.8 million jobs.
