Skate park closed for graffiti repair

After 10 years of planning, the Port Townsend Skate Park opened Saturday March 25, 2006.

PORT TOWNSEND LEADER - The Port Townsend skatepark was closed on Wednesday, Aug. 9 and remains closed until graffiti can be removed from two of the park's bowls, said Public Works Director Ken Clow. He estimated that it may be several days until the park can re-open.

However, Wednesday afternoon, the barricades and warning tape at the front entrance had not stopped young people from using other parts of the park. The new skate park rules include closure to the public should graffiti become a problem.

WSU, ESD Provide Technology Training to Rwandan Teens

Rwanda looks to WSU center for help in integrating technology into its secondary schools. These children really love their country.

Four Rwandan teens will visit Spokane Aug. 13-20 and WSU Jefferson County Extension and WSU North Olympic Learning Center Aug. 23-25 to receive technology training that they can take back to their homeland and classmates. (Photo: Florence)

Their two-week visit to the Pacific Northwest, which includes stints in Pullman and the Puget Sound region, is part of an on-going initiative to help shift Rwanda’s economy toward a foundation of information-based jobs and away from subsistence agriculture.

The students, accompanied by a chaperone (Solange M) from the Rwanda Ministry of Education, will receive training that focuses on entrepreneurism and business practices. (Photo: Moreen)

The areas of learning include digital photography, networking, trouble shooting, digital embroidery, video conferencing and blogging.

The Digital Learning Commons will also provide a subset of tools for the students to use. While many initiatives in Africa provide hardware and computers, the machines are useless in the long run without the human capacity to repair and maintain them.

Emily Peel, King County 4-H Washington State Teen Ambassador

Emily Peel, King County 4-H Washington State Teen Ambassador, talks about her club experiences over the past 8 years at the Sunday Pike Place Market. Emily Peel has been participating at the State Fair for seven years.

At 17, this King County 4-Her is eager to demonstrate her harp skills, exhibit rabbits and take part in the foods and clothing competition. Emily, along with every other 4-H youth at the State Fair, has already won the highest honor at the local county fair and will compete with the “best of the best” at the state level. Competition is not against peers but, rather, youth are judged by a set of standards. “I’m not normally very competitive but I like this type of competition because of the standards,” explained Emily. “I’m not competing against another person but, instead, I’m being judged on how well I’ve mastered a certain skill,” she added.

4-H Network News – Kids showing us tomorrow on the internet

If you want to see the future of the web just look at what the kids are doing with it. There’s a lot of talk among experts that uses terms like social networking but the kids just use whatever form of communication is handiest and, well, communicate. While the experts are debating what will come next and how to do it, the kids are taking whatever is available, be it blogs, MySpace or cell phones and using it right now.
I turned down the opportunity today to be interviewed by a 9 year old girl for the 4-H Network News. This was at the Jefferson County Fair. I said no because I have had a small part in their program from its inception and definitely don’t offer a “man on the street” point of view.

This is a program that is run by 4-H youth and has the rough edges that you’d expect from kid produced audio and video. Today one young man showed me a video introduction that he made for a piece on training dogs. He was so proud of the fact that he only spend 10 minutes on a 25 second video segment. That is amazing. What’s amazing is that a 15 year old is so comfortable with high end video production software. It wouldn’t fly in a TV studio but that’s not the point. The video was shot today and will be on the web this weekend. It’s immediate and it’s real.
I’ve seen the program take off and soar so it’s sometimes difficult to realize how ground breaking this is. We have kids producing news and documentaries with passion and increasing skill. We have kids, who might otherwise be bored by small town life and turn to drugs, who are creating a community resource, learning marketable skills and having a lot of fun in the process. And they’re doing it at the speed of youth.

Here’s an example.

powered by ODEO
About a year ago, Pamela Roberts, the County 4-H Coordinator took a web design class from me. In week 4 of and 8 week program she was sharing her knowledge with the kids in her program. I said, why don’t you try Blogger. Two week later there were 5 4-H youth actively posting. Six months later they were actively podcasting and video podcasting on what has become a network of over 20 interconnected blogs. What Pam started has been helped buy the intensive efforts of the Internet Club leader, Jack Olmstead. Every time I stop by the 4-H office there’s something new to see.
While the program is part of Washington State University and the kids have free access to new Macs running Final Cut Pro and all of Apple’s production software, their web presence is all basic. They run their community news from Blogger. They use YouTube and Google Video. They use Odeo and Audio Blogger for getting their media out. These are all simple and free services and they work better than I would have ever thought.
As a “Web Professional”, I, of course, need to research and find the “best” tool for the job. They just grab what’s handy and run with it and spend their time creating content without getting hung up on what’s trendy or “best.” This is a great lesson in “just do it.” Nike marketing hype aside, that’s great advice, that these young people don’t even know their offering. They just do it, with incredible support from their program leaders, true, but they are offering the best kind of advice, that of example.

Bite Of Seattle: Franz Bakery: 100 Foot Hot Dog

Franz Builds a World Record Hot Dog
Friday July 6, 2006

In order to celebrate our hundred-year anniversary and make it truly memorable, we decided to do something really big. In fact it was so big that it set a Guinness Book world record. With the news media and officials standing by and with the help of Hill Meat Company in Pendleton, Oregon*, we built the longest hot dog and bun in the world–one hundred and four feet and nine inches long to be exact. But getting there was no easy task.

Dreaming big sometimes requires a lot of well thought out planning and perfect execution. After carefully considering what would be required to bake a continuous, hundred-foot long hot dog bun, we first determined that one of the factory windows would have to be removed. On top of that, we had to build the longest baking pan in the world as the bread was fed into the ovens. Remarkably, all that extra effort and planning worked out without a hitch and our first try was all that was needed to break the world record. What a remarkable feat and an exceptional team effort. Way to go Franz staff and bakers. - US Bakery

Northwest Kiwanis Camp shows heart

Category: Jefferson County

VIDEO: An interview with Bie McNamara, Program Director, and Julie Utter, Camp Nurse.

By Kelly Joines, Leader Staff Writer

Beneath the shade of a tree, Kiwanis camper Kristal Jones, nicknamed "Big Rig Mamma," is the center of attention as she sings a version of "Wheels on the Bus" - big rig style.

Campers and counselors join in, laughing and shouting with Big Rig Mamma, who also leads the hand motions for a big rig truck's horn and wheels - which went all the way to Hazzard County.

"See all the people laughing around here? That's why I come here," said John Downing, Port Townsend Kiwanis Club volunteer and former camp board member.

Downing has volunteered at the Northwest Kiwanis Camp for the developmentally disabled at Beausite Lake for four years, and his 12-year-old son, David, has attended the camp for three.

Like Downing, many volunteers and about 20 counselors put time, energy and heart into the camp to provide a safe environment for campers to enjoy their weeklong stay. (More)
