Daily World / Terry Loney The stately 65-foot Pacific silver fir picked to be the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree is hoisted by a crane onto the truck that will carry it to Washington, D.C. The tree was found growing on a steep ridge face near the West Fork of the Wynooche River last spring.

Wynooche valley — As Phil Zembas gazed up the milky white trunk of the 65-foot Pacific silver fir he was struck by a shiver of anxiety.
Zembas, 55, a retired seed orchard manager for the U.S. Forest Service, had cut down hundreds of trees during his career. But this one was different. “This is the big one,” he said.
The picture-perfect 45-year-old fir had been picked to grace the west lawn at the U.S. Capitol this holiday season. Thousands would see it up close and millions more on television. …
