Beneath the shade of a tree, Kiwanis camper Kristal Jones, nicknamed "Big Rig Mamma," is the center of attention as she sings a version of "Wheels on the Bus" - big rig style.

Campers and counselors join in, laughing and shouting with Big Rig Mamma, who also leads the hand motions for a big rig truck's horn and wheels - which went all the way to Hazzard County.

"See all the people laughing around here? That's why I come here," said John Downing, Port Townsend Kiwanis Club volunteer and former camp board member.

Downing has volunteered at the Northwest Kiwanis Camp for the developmentally disabled at Beausite Lake for four years, and his 12-year-old son, David, has attended the camp for three.

Like Downing, many volunteers and about 20 counselors put time, energy and heart into the camp to provide a safe environment for campers to enjoy their weeklong stay. (More)
