It’s hard work being a rock star

“I’ve never thought of it as getting paid to make music; I’ve thought of it as getting paid to move equipment,” says Daryl Davis, Centrum’s School of Rock musical director.

It’s Thursday afternoon, and School of Rock participants are getting ready to rock ‘n’ roll at the weeklong workshop’s finale concert on Friday night. Davis’ task is to clue in each group about what they need to know besides musical notes and lyrics when it comes to performing.

Each band is required to play one song; a second song is optional. Most of the kids think their band can play two; a few others aren’t sure. The song(s) should be something learned during the workshop or written in the ’50s “roots” idiom using the strong three-chord backbeat made famous by the likes of Bo Diddley, Buddy Holly, Elvis and other greats.
