Sayings such as "Have a nice day" or "Keep smiling" often go unnoticed or unappreciated in our busy lives. But Samantha Bremmer, an eighth-grade student at Mill Creek Middle School, is using the messages to bring positive energy back into the classroom.

While most of her friends were enjoying a much-needed winter break from classes, Samantha - with fellow eighth-grader Ashley Sobczak helping her in the end complete the project - spent her time personally writing 820 messages on Post-it Notes to put on students' lockers.

Samantha, who attached the notes to lockers throughout the school earlier this month, said the idea came after she watched numerous videos focused on anti-bullying.

"I just thought of it out of the blue after watching videos of so many people saying mean things to others," she explained. "Some people need encouragement to get through the day, and I thought it would be nice to leave a positive comment for everyone."

Samantha said she has not been a victim of bullying but that she has seen it firsthand among friends and classmates.

'The Pregnancy Project' Due as Book and TV Movie

Last April, Gaby Rodriguez, then a 17-year-old high-school honor student in Toppenish, Wash., landed in the media spotlight when she announced that she had feigned a pregnancy as an experiment for her senior project. The widespread attention—she was interviewed by newspapers across the country and appeared on Today—led to a book contract with Simon & Schuster, as well as a TV movie deal with Lifetime. The publisher will release The Pregnancy Project, which Rodriguez wrote with Jenna Glatzer, on January 17 with a 100,000-copy first printing, and the TV film airs on January 28.

"I wanted to do something that would impact my school and my community, and decided to start with something small, to bring an awareness of teen pregnancy," says Rodriguez of the inspiration for her experiment. "Teen pregnancy is a big problem, and not only in my community. At a time in their lives when teens are becoming sexually active, they need to realize how the decisions they make now will ultimately affect their lives. And those teens who do become pregnant need to know that it’s not the end of the road. They can find support for themselves and their child, and can move forward."

Intending to build a buzz about their 4-H Super Science Saturday event, Colville Reservation Extension 4-H initiated their promotion plan by sending press releases to four local newspapers. But, they didn’t stop there.

They didn’t stop there: posters were printed in advance of the event and posted in local businesses and community bulletin boards. Handbills were sent home with students at area schools, an ad was displayed on the Ferry County Extension website and an email announcement was sent out to Colville Tribes employees across the reservation. My beach stewardship started a Revolution!

On one of my favorite work days, we took part in a Fish Fling at the Skokomish River where we threw salmon carcasses from a hatchery into a mountain river in order to provide the river system with nutrients. When the dead salmon are thrown into the river they provide food for larger animals and are spread around the river and forest, positively effecting the riparian zone: where the river interacts with the land. Not only was this helpful to the river, but it turns out flinging salmon off of a bridge as hard as you can is a lot of fun. Who would have guessed?

Andrea absolutely loved participating in 4-H!

I always had so much fun with my friends in 4-H – and the snacks we ate kept me from getting hungry after school.

Andrea attended 4-H daily after school for over NINE YEARS. She started in kindergarten and yet she consistently enjoyed the fun, hands-on science activities that were planned each day.

(The spontaneous photo at left shows Andrea at a WSU 4-H summer camp - she looks confident and ready to take on the world!)

Andrea was PHYSICALLY ACTIVE planting trees, restoring animal habitats, pulling invasive weeds, growing gardens, cleaning beaches and such. The 4-H projects were MEANINGFUL for her as they truly made a positive difference in her community. For example, from the school bus window Andrea could see the trees growing along the shoreline that she and her friends had helped restore. She also learned to sew, cook, and speak in public. She had FUN with computers, ecology, video production, photography, robotics, rocketry and more!

Andrea never knew what to expect when she came to 4-H – it was a constant set of surprises with new and fun activities, and at the same time the committed, well-trained staff was consistently there for her. In fact Andrea’s 4-H leaders literally became part of her extended family.

One day Andrea’s 4-H leader brought in a script for a video that he was planning – surprisingly the words were all written backwards! He explained how they would eventually reverse the film on a computer to make the words sound like real language, but the look on Andrea’s face was hilarious. She started to slowly sound out the backwards sentences on camera and could barely continue since she was laughing so hard. But she and the others PERSISTED and completed the filming that day.

The next week her 4-H leader returned with the finished film and she was then able to see how the technology worked. Her interest piqued to the point that she asked the 4-H leaders if she could attend the annual camp at WSU that summer. With the TRUST built over the years and the confidence in the STABILITY of the 4-H program, Andrea’s mother was pleased to let her go. There she was able to explore more technologies and even learn sign language.

Now Andrea sees herself as a future college student, who can navigate complex subjects and who can pursue her passions and contribute her talents to the world.

4-H clubs and activities tap into the unique passions and interests of school-aged youth, sparking their imaginations to become the great thinkers and leaders of tomorrow!

The tree will be set up in the front reception area the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011.
Items left under the Giving Tree will be picked up and delivered on Monday, Dec. 12.

Items donated for the Tri-Area Christmas for Children Program are to be UNWRAPPED gift items for children, ages infants thru 18. Gift wrapping supplies are also welcome, but the gifts themselves are to be unwrapped.

Delivery of donated items for the Tri-Area Christmas for Children Program is to the VFW Hall next to the Hadlock Post Office. Sunday, Dec. 11, 9am to 4pm OR Monday, Dec. 12, 9am to 4pm.

Items for the Tri-Area food bank can also be left under the Giving Tree (and will also be picked up on Monday, Dec. 12). These items can include non-perishable food items, pet food and personal care items.

Andy Mackie passed away last week and the world lost a friend. Andy worked with countless children on the Olympic Peninsula through his music, putting harmonicas, violins, guitars, etc. into their hands and encouraging them to express themselves through music. Andy also worked quietly behind the scenes with incarcerated adults, helping them grapple with the negative impact that abusing drugs and alcohol had had on their lives. Andy was committed to a clean and sober lifestyle and he supported others in their striving toward that goal. Thank you, Andy, for all your life's contributions. You will be missed.

“The Exploratory Regional Parks and Recreation Committee (ERPRC) is looking at options and solutions to maintain, enhance, and support parks and recreation programs for all of East Jefferson County. The existing organization and funding for parks and recreation is not sustainable and this Committee is charged with finding creative and practical ways of saving what we have and improving our parks and recreation programs. The City, County, schools, sports clubs, healthcare entities, non-profits, and citizens are all at the table. The Committee is conducting a survey starting September 20, 2011.

1. Existing Jefferson County and City of Port Townsend Park Facilities and Recreation Programs provide the residents of this area and visitors to our area with a rich and varied experience.

2. Existing Jefferson County and the City of Port Townsend Park Facilities and Recreation Programs are an unparalleled asset to the area.

3. Existing Jefferson County and the City of Port Townsend Park Facilities and Recreation Programs come at a cost, and in these uncertain financial times they are in jeopardy with existing funding mechanisms and approaches.

4. A comprehensive, region-wide assessment and evaluation of park facilities and recreation programs has never been completed.

5. Because a comprehensive, region-wide assessment has not been done, it is not clear where gaps exist in facilities and services.

6. Options for funding parks facilities and recreation programs in East Jefferson County and the City need to be considered, evaluated, and a preferred approach chosen that creates sustainable funding, facilities, and programs.

7. Jefferson County and the City of Port Townsend have jointly created the Exploratory Regional Parks and Recreation Committee that is charged with considering the existing level of park and recreation services on a regional basis, assessing the needs of the region, evaluating options for meeting the needs, proposing approaches for financially supporting those needs, and making recommendations to the County and the City.

8. The Committee is composed of a balanced group of representatives, local governments, schools, healthcare entities, sports clubs, non-profits, and citizens who will consider these issues and make recommendations.

9. Citizens are encouraged to become informed of the issues, provide input to the Committee and staff, and be part of the solution to resolving park and recreation needs in a sustainable manner.

TWO YEARS AGO, Pamela Roberts, then Jefferson County 4-H director, got a call from Janette Force, director of the Port Townsend Film Festival, inviting her to a movie.

“The Cats of Mirikitani” was being shown at the Quilcene Community Center, with director Linda Hattendorf speaking about the documentary's subject, artist Jimmy Mirikitani.

Also invited to speak was Ray Kawamoto, whose family had farmed in the Quilcene area for almost a century.

Documentary

Last Tuesday, Roberts, now interim WSU Extension director, was back at the Quilcene Community Center to present the premiere of “The Kawamotos of Lake Leland,” a documentary she was inspired to make after meeting Ray two years ago.

For Tuesday's premiere, 150 people — friends, family, neighbors and former classmates — turned up to honor the man whose family put down roots in Quilcene that were never torn up, even by war.

“It's not about the internment,” Roberts explained before the showing. “It's about a pioneer Japanese-American family.”

But what happened before Ray was born is well-known among the local families: how the Kawamotos' neighbors, Jack and Fern Dyke, volunteered to look after the family farm when Ray's parents, Joe and Shigeko Kawamoto, and his grandparents, Kaichi and Itsuno Kawamoto, were interned at the start of World War II.

Returned to family

The Dykes lived on the farm, paid the taxes, and when the Kawamoto family returned, they returned the farm to them.

“We couldn't have found any better people to turn the property over to,” Ray said in an interview that provided the narrative thread of the film.

The Kawamotos were sent to Tule Lake in California, where they lived for six months, Ray said.

Then a family in Northern Idaho offered them a home on their farm.

The Kawamotos had their own house, Ray said, and the sons of the owners, the Deans, went to Quilcene and brought back the family cars so the Kawamotos had transportation for weekend outings. They lived on the Dean farm for more than two years.

“It was lucky and fortunate for them,” Ray said in the film. “Life at the internment camp wasn't so good.”

Also interned were Ray's uncle and aunt, Phil and Alice Okano, Joe Kawamoto's youngest sister, who lived in Shelton.

Attending premiere

Their daughter, Pamela Okano, who lives in the Seattle area, attended last Tuesday's premiere and spoke on the connection she discovered between her parents and Jimmy Mirikitani.

Going through family documents, Okano said, she had once came across an affidavit, dated Dec. 12, 1941, and signed by her father, who had a dry-cleaning business.

On it, he swears that he, his wife and their three employees — his brother, his sister and an unrelated person — were natural-born American citizens. The name of the third person was Tsutomu Mirikitani.

The name meant nothing to Okano at the time, she said. Later, she saw “The Cats of Mirikitani,” and liking the artist's work bought one of the cat paintings.

But it wasn't until a few months ago, when she came across the affidavit again while sorting photographs for a family reunion, that Okano wondered if the dry-cleaning employee and the artist were the same person.

From the documentary, she knew he had once lived in the Seattle area. From the Internet, she discovered his first name was Tsutomu.

Exchange of details

An exchange of information and photographs between her family and Mirikitani in New York, facilitated by Hattendorf, confirmed it.

“When he saw the photographs, he remembered working with my dad and my aunt,” Okano said.

Other family members at the premier were Ray's spouse, Margie Kawamoto; their son, Tony; daughter Heather; and granddaughter Kayleigh, 8.

Kayleigh's favorite part of the documentary: “When Papa was laughing,” she said, referring to her grandfather, whose positive outlook shines through every frame.

Hector Munn, whose family also settled at Lake Leland, said the Munns and the Kawamotos had been friends for more than 100 years.

It was his grandfather who offered Ray's grandfather, who was living in Vancouver, B.C., a job running in the milk-skimming station at Lake Leland, Munn said.

When Kaichi Kawamoto bought the property to start the farm, son Joe had to sign the deed because he was born in America, Ray said.

Ray, an only child, recalled his father taking him around the community, where he was identified by his father's name.

“For years, I thought my name was ‘Joe's boy,'” Ray said.

The Quilcene Historic Museum is planning an exhibit about the Kawamoto family next year, according to Larry McKeehan, a board officer.

The exhibit will include the jigsaw puzzle that Milton Bradley made from a photo of the farm.

McKeehan and Kathleen Kleer brought cultural items to display at the premiere.

Christine Sydneysmith demonstrated the art of sumi-e painting with charcoal ink on rice paper and plans to offer classes at the Quilcene Community Center this fall.

The film premiere was the Quilcene community's “Ninth Night” program for August and included a potluck with a Japanese theme, which Ray, whose mother was an excellent cook, found humorous.

“I even ate some of it,” Ray said. “It was really pretty good.”

The internment of American citizens of Japanese descent living on the West Coast during World War II is a chapter of history that many people would rather forget.

But it's one Ray Kawamoto said should always stay on the pages.

He told his family's story, he said at the premiere, in the hopes that it might open someone's eyes.

“We need to appreciate what we have and to realize that some things are worth fighting for,” Ray said.

“It's a reminder of what can happen in your own country.”

Inter-Tribal Canoe Journey 2011

Port Townsend landing at Fort Worden a success!

Since its inception, the Intertribal Canoe Journey, celebrated by the Northwestern tribes, has evolved into a dynamic agent for social change. It has sparked a cultural renaissance with Native youth. Most importantly, the Inter-tribal Canoe Journey mandates that all participants have healthy sober lifestyles so that they are physically, mentally and spiritually prepared for this intense undertaking. Native youth have been enriched by the “Paddle” and their interest in participating continues to grow each year.

Shown at right is Marlin Holden, a direct descendant of Chief Chetzemoka of the Jamestown S'Klallam tribe. On July 19, 2011 Marlin welcomed paddlers from across Puget Sound and even Canada, who arrived in canoes on the beach at Fort Worden in Port Townsend, Washington - part of the ancestral homelands of the Jamestown S'Klallam tribe.

THANK YOU to everyone, who made this event such a success. We could not have accomplished this without our dynamic and committed Port Townsend volunteers! Our organizational and parking volunteers were simply the best. Cookie bakers were awesome. Set-up crews showed their strength. Meal preparers and servers were incredible. Clean-up crews did a bang up job. Our official photographers came through for us. We even had a security crew who worked the night shift to watch the canoes!

At the campground at Fort Worden I saw this warm-hearted Native-American father patiently attending to his daughter. When I asked if I could take his photo, he was glad to say yes and he removed her bottle from her mouth for the photo. You can see her reaction to that idea on her face. She was clearly not pleased!

You can see what she looked like before this interaction in the photo to the left - she has her father's devoted and undivided attention. So nice to see such healthy families in our tribal communities. It's a wonderful day!

I also enjoyed a group of tribal mothers, who were watching their toddlers play in the sand on the beach at Fort Worden. There were little drummers and longhouse builders - all having a great time as part of the Inter-Tribal Canoe Journey.

A high level of respect was evident throughout this event. In fact, our clean-up crews had little to do when it was all over because of the consistent care that was shown from the participants, even though hundreds of people were camped out on the parade grounds - I wish all our events in Port Townsend were so carefully accomplished.

THANK YOU ALL FOR EVERYTHING AND FOR CONTRIBUTING TO SUCH A WONDERFUL DAY IN OUR COMMUNITY. I LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU NEXT YEAR AS THE INTER-TRIBAL CANOE JOURNEY CONTINUES!

WHITE CENTER, Wash. -- The lunch hour is over and Evergreen High School custodian Tyrone Curry gets out his broom for a quick sweep up.

"I try to make sure it's spotless and it's ready for the kids," he said.

After cleaning, he's off to his second passion: coaching the track and field team.

"I just like staying busy," Curry said with a laugh.

But in reality, he doesn't have to work. He's a millionaire.

"I know my wife says, 'Oh, you don't really have to work' and I say, 'Yeah. I do."

Five years ago, Curry won nearly $3.4 million in the state lottery. Even before his numbers were drawn, the coach knew where he wanted to spend it.

"Ten years ago, I said if I win some money, I'm going to put a track here."

In early April, coach Curry presented the district with $40,000 to go towards a brand new track.

"Tyrone goes above and beyond in the sports he coaches," said senior Devante Botello. "It's a deep feeling. All I can say is thanks."

Curry said the gift he has given Evergreen pales in comparison to what the kids have given him.

"Kids do things for you. They keep you young," Curry said.

In June, after 34 years, Curry will retire. But, he'll be back to see that brand new track and cheer on the team.

"It's gonna be hard when I retire, you know, but I'll still be here."

Curry plans to run for the school board after retirement.

His donation will be matched with a $75,000 youth sports grant.

4-H ROV (Remote Operating Vehicle) Team on to international contest!

SKAGIT COUNTY, Wash. - If an oil spill like the April 2010 BP disaster occurs again, members of the WSU Extension Sea-Tech 4-H Club just might be the future scientists to address it.

Fascinated by science, engineering and technology, and wild about the thrill of competition, the four teams of 20 teens recently earned top honors at the MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education) regional event. One team will advance to the international contest in Houston, Texas in mid-June.

There were 35 groups competing from around the region.

Real-world experience

This year’s mission simulated the remote operated vehicle (ROV) activities performed to cap the blowout of the BP well off the Louisiana coast.

“Teams needed to capture and remove a collapsed pipe, insert a nozzle into a blowout preventer and close a valve on the well head,” said Lee McNeil, Sea-Tech Club leader. “Our more experienced Explorer Class team will have the added challenge of capping the well under pressure and flow at the international competition.”

Teams also took water samples, measured ambient pressure and collected specimens from the floor of the pool.

Throughout her high school years Chloe has developed an avid interest in county and state government, participating in mock trial, running for 'governor' of the state of 'KYG', becoming a master at writing bills and press releases. She expanded her 4-H experience by serving as page in the Washington state legislature. Her enthusiasm and affinity for governmental activites resulted in being one of eight students in Washington state who planned and facilitated the 2011 Know Your Government conference in Olympia, WA.

Puget Sound Voyagers Launch Dragonheart Longdory

Members of the Puget Sound Voyagers 4-H school enrichment program were on hand, with community volunteers, to launch the long dory, Dragonheart, near the dock at Lower Hadlock May 26. Together they had built the Dragonheart at the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building in Port Hadlock, WA. Members are students in Chimacum School District P.I. and Port Townsend School District I.C.E. programs. This project provided hands-on woodworking, sail making and sailing educational experiences that will last a life-time for the students involved.

London boy breaks Seven Summits record with Everest climb

George Atkinson began the Seven Summits challenge at the age of 11

A boy of 16 has become the youngest person in the world to scale the highest mountains in every continent.

George Atkinson, from Surbiton, south-west London, began the Seven Summits challenge by scaling Kilimanjaro in 2005 and completed it by reaching the top of Mount Everest on Thursday.

He broke the record of US teenager Johnny Collinson, who completed the challenge at the age of 17 last year.

George's mother Penny said she felt "elated and emotional".

The British Mountaineering Council has confirmed George's record, who was aged 16 years and 362 days when he reached the summit of Mount Everest.

George, who turns 17 on Sunday, began the challenge of climbing the highest peaks in seven continents at the age of 11 by scaling Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

He then climbed Russia's Mount Elbrus in 2007 and reached the summits of Indonesia's Carstensz Pyramid and Argentina's Mount Aconcagua in 2008.

Mount McKinley in North America was next, followed by Mount Vinson in Antarctica which he climbed late last year.

In her son's blog, Penny Atkinson announced the completion of his challenge: "George has done it. He reached the summit at about 8.15am Nepali time.

"It sounds as if the weather is good...

"A big thank you to everyone who has helped George to achieve his dream."

She added: "Just get my boy down safe now!"

Washington State 4-H Youth Development Program: "Port Townsend’s drinking water is now cleaner thanks to a group of 4-H’ers who care about the environment."
Youth in the 4-H Stewardship program took to the Big Quilcene River watershed recently to haul thousands of pounds of garbage out of the area.
“We found four mattresses, a water heater, a set of new tires, couches, a dryer, TV, microwave, a crib, baby toys and an office chair,” said 14-year old Donnie Person. “We went down a steep slope and pulled out (those items) and more typical trash like wrappers, glass, and old clothes and put it into garbage bags.”
Donnie is one of a dozen youth from Jefferson County who, along with community volunteers, U.S. Forest Service, city and county employees, spent Earth Day April 23 filling fourteen pick-up loads of trash from the Big Quilcene River watershed which supplies drinking water to area residents."

Congratulations Hannah Tipton! Hannah, a nine-year member of Jefferson County 4-H, has been awarded the Lewis County Trust Fund Scholarship of $500 by Washington State 4-H. Hannah plans to use the scholarship this fall at Northwest College of Art in Poulsbo, Washington, after graduating from Chimacum High School.

Hannah has participated in gardening, dog, foods, Know Your Government, leadership, photography and video production projects in 4-H. She uses her dog training skills to help community and younger 4-H members train their own dogs. Hannah has participated in the KYG conference in Olympia four years, culminating in using her video skills to help produce a team "Politics and the Media" video. Her senior project for high school involved the creation of two community service videos for not-for-profit organizations in our county.

We are so proud of Hannah! She is a positive role model for youth in our 4-H program and community, and we wish her success in future endeavors.

$1 Million Grant Funds WSU Extension ‘Healthy Gardens, Healthy Youth’ Project

WSU Extension is the lead institution on a new “Healthy Gardens, Healthy Youth” project funded by a $1 million grant from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service. The grant was announced today by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. Aimed at reducing childhood obesity and improving nutrition, the pilot project spans four states, will serve an estimated 2,800 students at 70 elementary schools, and will engage low-income students in the physical activity involved in growing food and learning life skills. The Cooperative Extension Services of Iowa State University, Cornell University, and the University of Arkansas are collaborating with WSU Extension on the project.

“School gardens hold great promise for educating our kids about food production and nutrition,” said Vilsack. “Learning where food comes from and what fresh food tastes like, and the pride of growing and serving your own fruits and vegetables, are life-changing experiences. Engaging kids in our efforts to end childhood hunger and curb childhood obesity is critical if we are going to succeed.”

“Across the nation, communities are facing the interrelated problems of obesity and chronic diseases associated with poor nutrition and lack of physical activity, which are often linked to poverty, food insecurity, lack of access to or utilization of open or green spaces, and limited understanding of the role of nutrition and physical activity play in overall health,” said Brad Gaolach, the project’s lead scientist and director of Pierce and King County Extension.

The project will utilize WSU Extension educators’ expertise in 4-H, gardening, and nutrition programs. Additionally, Extension researchers in all four states will assess both the process of implementing gardens in low-income schools and the nutritional outcomes of the project. King County is a nationally recognized nexus of efforts to improve local nutrition and confront health problems through gardening and other outdoor activities.

“We’ve been working in this arena for at least 10 years,” said Gaolach. “To me, the exciting thing is that this grant validates the value of the land-grant university system. We are, I think, the only organization that has programs in gardening, youth development, and nutrition; is capable of disseminating and implementing this project on a national scale; and can also conduct the outcome assessment.”

Study Shows 4-H Youth Healthier than Peers

4-H’ers less likely to smoke, drink alcohol, use drugs

Chevy Chase, MD (April 11, 2011) – According to recent findings from Tufts University, 4-H youth are engaging in positive healthy living behaviors more often than youth that do not participate in 4-H. According to the study, 4-H’ers, regardless of their background, socio-economic status, race, and gender, thrive through the health/safety education and experiences they receive through 4-H programming.

Youth development scholar, Dr. Richard Lerner, works with researchers at the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University to conduct The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development. The longitudinal study has found that, when compared to other youth, young people involved in 4-H are:

More likely to spend more time exercising or being physically active;
Two times less likely to engage in drug use;
Two times less likely to use cigarettes or drink alcohol.

“The results of this longitudinal study continually reinforce the idea that when youth participate in programs such as 4-H, they thrive in numerous ways including health, positive development, and community contribution,” said Dr. Lerner. “The comparisons we’ve made between 4-H youth and other young people highlight the considerable strengths and health of the young men and young women participating in 4-H around the country.”

4-H Healthy Living programs are conducted by the 109 land-grant universities and the Cooperative Extension System, and seek to address national issues including nutrition, physical fitness, substance abuse, safety, and social and emotional wellness.

“With nearly 2.7 million youth enrolled in 4-H healthy living programs in 2009, the findings from the Tufts study underline 4-H’s unique ability to make a significant impact on the health and wellness of many of our nation’s future leaders,” said Donald T. Floyd, Jr., president and CEO of National 4-H Council. “Working in conjunction with the White House Let’s Move! campaign and the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award challenge, 4-H’s extensive healthy living programs equip youth with the knowledge and skills that will prepare them physically, emotionally and socially to meet the challenges of the 21st century."

4-H National Headquarters, National Institute of Food and Agriculture, and National 4-H Council have made a significant commitment to participate in the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award challenge, aiming to have 100,000 4-H members complete the challenge by September 2011.

The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award recognizes those who log their recommended physical activity for six consecutive weeks, five days a week (60 minutes for kids, 30 minutes for adults). A Port Townsend woman won $250,000 in the Washington State Lottery's Mega Millions drawing Friday, March 25.

Mary Turner spent $10 on tickets at the Port Townsend QFC with her daughter because they just “had a feeling” they were going to win.

“We don’t play [the lottery] very often,” said Turner in a press release from Washington State Lottery. “But we knew there was a big jackpot, and my daughter and I just felt we were going to win. Maybe not the big jackpot, but something.”

WSU Extension Youth Take on Media and Politics
More than 250 4-H youth and volunteers from around Washington gathered in Olympia recently for a series of press conferences that addressed illegal immigration, year-round schools, teen violence and Internet privacy.

These events weren’t part of a candidate’s political platform or hosted by a special interest group. They were a part of the 2011 WSU Extension 4-H’s Know Your Government conference.

4-H’ers became members of the media during the four-day conference in February as they examined and reported issues that impact their communities, and gained an understanding of politics in the media. They also learned how their own views can affect the coverage of these topics.

Seattle Area 4-H Club Builds Robots That Take the Plunge

4-H’ers around the country are preparing for the 2011 robotics season by reviewing tasks, devising strategy and establishing the best-laid plans for bringing a collection of nuts and bolts to life.

For members of the Sea-Tech 4-H Club in Washington State, building a robot for the MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education Center) competition has one critical element: The robot must operate underwater.

The MATE competition, an international underwater robotics event for young engineers, tasks teams with creating a robot that can solve current deep-sea issues in an effort to engage youth in science and technology.

AVMA video promotes animal welfare policy—Pain control measures for cattle recommended

The goal was to produce a film that would appeal to children - that included some comedic elements - but that would teach them about real scientific issues. Tacoma, Washington's 4-H Network News team brought their acting and comedic talents to the table for an upcoming video about stewardship on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state. This team of videographers works weekly with 4-H Technology Program coordinator, Jennifer Johnson of WSU Pierce County Extension. Pamela Roberts, Jefferson County 4-H coordinator visited to coach the video production process. Chino led the team in planning this comedic drama, featuring Jordan's slick card game, Kathy and Norm's news commentary, Kevin's hilarious puppets and Chino's dramatic physical comedy.

This video is being produced in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and features footage of:

a salmon carcass "fish fling," showing 4-H youth returning dead salmon to the Skokomish River to increase the nutrient value in the riparian zone;
a helicopter flying in loads of trees complete with roots into the Skokomish River to build up "log jams" to slow the river flow down and create deep pools for salmon to thrive;
4-H trail builders maintaining trails for public use in the Olympic National Forest; and
restoration of elk forage by replanting open areas and decommissioned roads in the forest.

4-H challenge course first in an urban setting

PUYALLUP - The first WSU 4-H challenge course in an urban setting will be built at Camp Long in West Seattle.

A memorandum of agreement between WSU Extension 4-H and the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation will provide outdoor facilities for youth to experience hands-on activities designed to help them develop decision making, teamwork, and leadership skills.

Scott VanderWey, WSU 4-H adventure education director, said the activities will help increase the teens’ self confidence and positive risk taking.

“Our learn-by-doing method engages teens so they understand what it’s like to make healthy decisions for themselves and their peers,” said VanderWey. "The research based approach, known as social emotional learning, is proven to increase student motivation, student attendance, mastery of subject material, and a more positive school climate."

Seattle Parks and Recreation and WSU Extension have been partnering for almost three decades to serve youth and adults through 4-H clubs, Master Gardener programs and community outreach. City of Seattle naturalist Christina Gallegos has advocated for a challenge course on Seattle park property since the early 1990s.

“As a challenge facilitator, I am convinced that there is no better method to help connect youth with nature, leadership and problem solving skills,” she said.
Since 1980 WSU 4-H has run adventure education programs in 19 of the state's 39 counties. Camp Long will be the state's ninth 4-H challenge course.

Other courses are located in North Bend, Chelan, Leavenworth, Yakima, Gibbs Lake in Jefferson County, Pan Handle and Saint Pete’s in Thurston County, and Twin Lakes in Ferry County on the Colville Indian Reservation. More than 250,000 youth have participated in the challenge program.

Groundbreaking for the challenge course at Camp Long is set to begin in spring 2011, and the facility is expected to be open to the public in the fall.

The gift was announced Thursday at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center during the kickoff event for the public phase of The Campaign for Washington State University: Because the World Needs Big Ideas.

Begun in July 2006, the campaign’s goal is to raise $1 billion by 2015 to coincide with the university’s 125th anniversary. To date, $532.2 million has been committed.

WSU's Jefferson Extension leader Baril to retire

PORT HADLOCK -- Jefferson County will lose one of its most vocal supporters of agriculture, education and social programs when Washington State University Extension Executive Director Kathryn Baril retires at the end of this month.

In a letter announcing her resignation Tuesday, Baril said she was excited about the future.

"The time has come for me to move on to pursue some other interests; to devote more time with my family, friends and garden; to weigh and embrace other offers and opportunities that are before me now," she wrote.

"I'll be changing the shape of my days and the scope of my focus, but I'll be staying in our community."

"It's really time right now," Baril, 63, said of her decision.

"You know when you have done really good work, and I have accomplished many of my goals, teaching people how to feed and support their families."

The extension office, which was the first of its kind in the state, does this in two ways.

It supports agricultural programs like 4-H and teaches sustainable agricultural techniques to county residents.

My strawberries started a revolution!

Kamari Stallworth is a devoted and enthusiastic member of the Cedar Tree Performers 4-H club led by Linda Gately. The "Aroma" strawberries she is showing above provide an abundance of berries for jam, dehydrating and eating. Kamari's favorite is the yellow "Pineapple Alpine" strawberry and she looks forward to propagating more and find hiding places for them in the club garden! Kamari is also an expert at collecting and identifying bugs - her genuine excitement about her 4-H club activities has inspired others to appreciate the value of organic gardening and local food production More Than They Could Ever Imagine.

Cedar Tree Performers 4-H gardening club in Port Hadlock, Washington - led by Linda Gately, 4-H club leader - has distinguished itself not only as a vital educational program for young children, but as a research-based partner with university agricultural researchers. This group of youth have volunteered on multiple projects to grow seeds and plants in the micro-climate of their neighborhood to give researchers more information about the resiliency and response of certain plants and seed populations.

Cedartree Performers' garden is located at the Cedarbrook Seventh Day Adventist School and Daycare. These youth grow edible plants of all kinds including weeds, flowers, vegetables and fruit. The garden is completely cultivated by the 4-H'ers with heavy soil prep work help from adults. Many varieties are trialed for taste approval by kids and resistance to disease because it is an organic garden. Science, math, geography, history, and Latin are all integrated into the garden experience. There has been an ongoing Haskap berry trial to help Professor Maxine Thompson from Oregon State University with her research.

Their annual spring plant sale provides needed funds for the garden, foods, sewing

and other 4-H projects that the Cedartree Performers pursue.

How You Can Help Fight the Stigma of 'Mentally Ill'

In August of 2009, I co-founded a national organization created to combat the stigma of mental illness. We called it BringChange2Mind. I was compelled to do it because my sister, Jessie, lives with bipolar disorder and my nephew, Calen, lives with schizoaffective disorder and I realized that they were in a life-and-death battle, fighting to survive not only the symptoms and treatment of their illnesses, but the terrible stigma that surrounded them. I learned that, globally, one in four families is touched by mental illness. Mine happens to be one of them. I decided to do something and BringChange2Mind was born.
Change never happens without action. In the past, companies have made commitments to change their policies and behavior affecting the environment by signing the CERES Principles; people in the LGBTQ community by becoming signatories to the Equality Principles and others have altered discriminatory practices like apartheid in South Africa by signing the Sullivan Principles. These Principles are working.

This weekend, in San Diego, in front of an audience of 9000 at the Society for Neuroscience's big convention, Jessie, Calen and I launched the BringChange2Mind Princiiples. Inspired by one of our amazing volunteers, who lives with bipolar disorder and PTSD, our Principles were a group effort. They are concrete and actionable.

Over 57.7 million Americans -- 26 percent of the country -- live with a diagnosable mental illness in any given year. Yet two-thirds of those affected never seek treatment in large part due to the stigma of being labeled "mentally ill," and the resulting discrimination in social relationships, housing and employment. Tragically, every 17 minutes someone in American commits suicide, 90 percent of whom are living with some form of mental illness. Mental illnesses remain the leading cause of disability in the U.S., costing society over $190 billion annually. With one in four families having a family member living with a mental illness, there is also a hidden cost -- the drain on productive work by family members caring for loved ones.

So we present the BringChange2Mind Principles to you today. Your signing on to them will make a difference. You will be helping to create a future in which shame is replaced with dignity, misinformation with truth, discrimination with understanding and isolation with community.

The principles for people living with a mental illness:

I am living with a mental illness that is treatable and manageable.

I am a valuable and valued person and I deserve to be treated with respect.   

I am responsible for the decisions and choices I make in my life.

Educating myself about the symptoms of my illness, and any side effects I may have from treatment, will help me find and use the resources I need to work toward stability.  

Communicating about my experiences with others will help them support me in difficult times and keep me "on track."

If I am feeling suicidal, it is critical that I reach out for help, for in the face of real pain and suffering, it is others who can help me with a commitment to live.   I can reduce stigma in myself and in others by being open about living with mental illness, naming it out loud, and raising people's awareness.

The principles for everyone:

It is likely that someone I know is living with a mental illness and that fear of stigma may be preventing them from accepting their illness and seeking help.  

I can make a difference by learning about mental health issues and the devastating effects of stigma.

If someone I know exhibits sudden changes in behavior, I will pay attention and reach out to them.  

If someone I know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, I will take it seriously and make every effort to ensure they get help.

I will not perpetuate or tolerate stigma of any kind and will commit myself to changing the way society views people living with mental illness.

Jerry Newman Dedicated Extension Professional Retires After Three Decades of Service to 4-H

He’s a collaborator, an innovator, and a person who considers being on the forefront of animal science, not only necessary, but responsible and essential. Jerry Newman impacted the lives of countless 4-H staff, volunteers, and youth during his 30 years as a WSU state staff specialist.

It started with chickens in 1950 in the Florin Silver Leaf 4-H Club in northern California. At 10 years old his appreciation of animals soon branched out to include rabbits and sheep but he found his true calling with livestock. “I got my first calf in my teens and enjoyed working with the animal in different ways,” said Jerry who spent a decade as a 4-H youth. It wasn’t until much later that I would know the impact that livestock can have on children and teach them life skills that can carry them through their adulthood.”

Over the years Jerry’s admiration of agriculture and large animals led him to studies at University of California, Davis, where lived in a barn for two years taking care of 24 dairy bulls. Another six months assisting a sheep herdsman solidified his resolve to work in an agriculture-related career. After a brief stint in the Army Reserves, Jerry became the 4-H youth advisor in Solano County and later went on to earn a Master’s degree in Agriculture at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. His time and talent built a large program there during the 1970’s.

Outstanding County Volunteers Also Honored for Service to Youth

PUYALLUP, Wash.—Four Washington residents were inducted into the Washington State 4-H Hall of Fame for their leadership, commitment, and impact on 4-H and their communities. Honored at the 2010 4-H Forum in Spokane on October 15 was:
Lawana Harting, Dayton, Columbia County, has been a 4-H leader for 28 years. She leads projects in sewing, food and nutrition, entomology, beef, and leather craft.
Donna Hanger, Dayton, Columbia County, started her first 4-H club in 1971. She and co-leader Lawana Harting also are project leaders for food preservation, health, and swine. Together they also coordinate the Columbia County 4-H Dress Review, Foods for All Occasions, and baking contests.
Bruce Bradley, Port Orchard, Kitsap County, has served as a rabbit club leader, State 4-H Fair Rabbit Superintendent, and on the Washington State 4-H Fair Board. A volunteer for over 28 years, Bradley is also active in the Kitsap 4-H Council where he has held several leadership positions.
Jerry Newman, Palouse, Whitman, joined WSU Extension 4-H as a youth development specialist in 1979. Newman provided leadership in many project areas including equine, beef, sheep, swine, and animal quality assurance. He was also responsible for designing statewide and national curriculum and was instrumental in 4-H contests including Horse Bowl, Hippology, Horse Judging, and Forestry Stewardship.

WSU Clark County Extension 4-H’ers Receive National Honor for Video

Two Clark County 4-H teens have been recognized for their outstanding science video.

Heather Giberson, 18, of Battleground and Melissa Brown, also 18, from Vancouver, received second place out of 24 entries in the national 4-H Digital Storytelling project.
Their seven minute video, Music Rocks the Brain, examines how music stimulates the brain and positively impacts academic and sports performance.
“We found that kids do better in school, socially, and in athletics by being exposed to different types of music,” said Giberson, who did extensive editing on the piece.
The 4-H’ers learned how to interview, shoot video, and work collaboratively during the four month project. Clark County 4-H was one of eight 4-H programs nationwide to receive funding for the project. Three videos were submitted locally involving 15 Clark County teens who had no previous experience in videography.

This started back in 2003 as a humorous way for a group of men to draw attention and spark conversation about the mustache, men's health and prostate cancer. Since then, the month-long event has turned in to a large-scale international fundraiser for various prostate cancer research efforts.

An award-winning illustrator of more than a dozen children’s books, including Tom Thumb, High Rise Angel Food Cake and The Magic Rabbit, Port Townsend–based Watson has created the ink and acrylic image for the seventh annual Plant-A-Thon. The event is the largest fundraising/environmental service project in Jefferson County. Collectively, 250 students and parents from five local schools will plant 5,000 native trees at Tarboo Wildlife Preserve, a 310-acre salmon habitat restoration site near Quilcene...

Cards are available through schools that participate in the Plant-A-Thon. Participating schools include Swan School, Chimacum Pi Program, Sunfield Land for Learning, Quilcene Elementary and Jefferson Community School. Through cards sales and business sponsorships, schools raise more than $30,000 a year, collectively.

The cards are being sold now, in anticipation of two “green-belt-scale” tree-planting work parties in February. To purchase cards from any or all of the schools, visit http://swanschool.net.

We had a total of seven 4-H youth from Jefferson County, who performed to the level of champion and reserve champion at the Washington State 4-H Fair this year - this is a remarkable number given how small our county population is compared to so many other counties in our state. Jan’s volunteerism with Beach Watchers inspired her to earn a master’s degree in Marine Biology, which has led to her monitoring the health of the area’s marine environment. Her leadership has created extensive research and data collection on more than 30 beaches, and her thirst for knowledge is contagious. She frequently speaks with students and at public education events to motivate others to get involved.

Let's Clean Up Our Watershed - Saturday, Sept. 25!

We need your help to carry garbage out of our watershed on National Public Lands Day!

This Saturday, September 25, 2010 we will meet at the Quilcene Ranger Station at 9 am sharp for a required safety meeting before we go into the forest to do cleanup work. Tools, gloves, hardhats, etc. will be provided.

On Saturday, September 25, thirteen Port Townsend high school students in the 4-H Stewardship Program are asking you to join them in the forest! They will lead groups of community volunteers to cleanup the Quilcene-area watershed that supplies Port Townsend’s drinking water. This event is held on National Public Lands Day – a day when thousands of volunteers gather at national parks and forests, reservoirs and other public areas to improve and enhance the resources of those special places where Americans go to enjoy the outdoors. These projects are ones that would not have been accomplished without National Public Lands Day.

Jennifer Fujii with the Hood Canal Ranger District pointed out that, “This event should hold special meaning for the residents of Port Townsend, who receive their drinking water from the targeted cleanup area. I would love to see them turn out in strong numbers – not only because the work will directly benefit their community’s water, but also because the youth involved have put in a lot of effort to organize this cleanup.”

Pamela Roberts, Jefferson County 4-H coordinator emphasized, “We encourage all who are physically able to join us for this important community effort. We require volunteer participants to register beforehand so that we can responsibly plan for tools and group organization. We want to be sure that everyone has a great day outdoors, that they stay safe, enjoy the beauty of nature and fresh air while helping their watershed stay clean.”

Participants will start that day with a required safety meeting at 9 am at the Quilcene Ranger Station before driving into the forest for the cleanup. To register, send your name and contact information to Pamela Roberts, 4-H Coordinator, at proberts@jefferson.wsu.edu or call her at 765-0124.

On Saturday, September 25, twelve Port Townsend area youth in the 4-H Stewardship Program are asking you to join them in the forest! They will lead groups of community volunteers to cleanup the Quilcene-area watershed that supplies Port Townsend’s drinking water. This event is held on National Public Lands Day – a day when thousands of volunteers gather at national parks and forests, reservoirs and other public areas to improve and enhance the resources of those special places where Americans go to enjoy the outdoors. These projects are ones that would not have been accomplished without National Public Lands Day.

When 4-H heard that the U.S. Forest Service was looking to establish leadership opportunities for youth, it seemed natural to ask, “Why not have our youth help lead environmental projects in the Olympic National Forest while getting some fresh air and exercise themselves?”

Through a contract with the USFS, the 4-H Stewardship Program is able to pay the twelve youth participants for the Saturday projects they complete. This gives them a meaningful workforce and leadership experience, provides financial help to families who are in need of a boost, and helps these teens experience the personal satisfaction that comes from making real contributions to their community and to the environment.

“The City of Port Townsend’s municipal water is supplied by gravity from the Big and Little Quilcene Rivers. The existing surface water system has been in operation since 1928, making it one of the oldest water systems in Washington State. In addition to serving the residents of the City of Port Townsend, water is provided to the Port Townsend Paper Company, Glen Cove, unincorporated area west of the City, and the City wholesales water to Public Utility District No. 1 of Jefferson County (PUD) for the South Hastings Loop.” – City of Port Townsend Public Works – Water Quality
